Do You Really Expect Your Email To Be Private?

June 7, 2009

World renowned security expert Bruce Schneier doesn’t.

Schneier says that between the NSA’s massive internet eavesdropping program and GMail’s content oriented advertising it’s foolish to live under the illusion that your email is private. That’s not to mention your ISP, I have some other posts on that.

Schneier continues with comments on laptop data viewing or outright copying at the borders, SMS, telephone calls and certainly anything on LiveJournal or Facebook should be considered more than public, regardless of any privacy settings.

And if you use public WiFi or even your own unencrypted WiFi, you are literally broadcasting data of all sorts, including usernames and passwords, in the clear to whoever takes the opportunity to listen – and record – what you do online.

One way to protect yourself is with a fully encrypted VPN tunnel to another server on the internet that then relays your communications – hiding your IP address while doing so – on to the internet destination.

This process protects you from WiFi snooping and even an ISP who is either nosy or is logging your activity for profit or eventual government purposes.

Sign up for a free trial right now for GoTrusted’s secure VPN tunnel solution. It’s free to try and cheap protection once you decide to subscribe, which I think you will.
